Auburn adds VCU transfer Samir Doughty

Bruce Pearl continues to add future depth at guard after landing a commitment from VCU transfer Samir Doughty.

He will sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA undergraduate transfer rules.

Doughty averaged nine points and 3.6 rebounds per game in his freshman season with the Rams.

It’s also worth noting that he played 20 minutes or more in 25 of VCU’s games.

Lovell’s Analysis:

Doughty is a smooth guard that certainly has a lot of potential.

Will Wade found confidence in him early on, and that led to Doughty being a mainstay on the court in the latter part of the season.

If you want to point to a game where Doughty’s versatility was on display, there are a couple of games worth looking at.

For starters, there was Doughty’s highest-scoring game of the year in dropping 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor in a victory over Duquesne in early January.

But that wasn’t all, as the 6-foot-4 guard added nine assists, seven rebounds, and three steals.

Then there was VCU’s 91-81 win over St. Joseph’s on Valentine’s Day. Doughty had 10 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds in 33 minutes of action.

He’s simply just a good overall talent that can do a lot of different things well, especially on the offensive end of the floor as shown by his numbers last season.

If he can bring that all-around talent to Bruce Pearl’s squad, he should add an element on both ends of the floor that will make him a valuable part of the rotation for several seasons to come.

And when you combine that with the solid young backcourt already in place for the Tigers, that’ll give Pearl and company even more options as they try to continue this program’s ascent up the SEC ladder.
