We are moving closer to the start of the 2017-18 season, which means it’s time to start handing out preseason awards.
And while I polled SEC basketball fans on Twitter a while back, we’re gonna bring all the votes to the website to determine the winners for various categories.
The first award?
None other than the most valuable individual award in the preseason: SEC Preseason Player of the Year.
Many players have been listed below as potential Player of the Year candidates, and should you have a different choice, simply select “Other” and reply to me on Twitter with your player selection.
A quick run through of the candidates that are listed:
Michael Porter Jr. (FR forward, Missouri)
- A likely First Team All-American candidate and probably top two pick in the 2018 NBA Draft
KeVaughn Allen (JR guard, Florida)
- The Gators’ leading returner (14.0 PPG) that put up 35 points in the team’s Sweet 16 victory over Wisconsin
Yante Maten (SR forward, Georgia)
- Finished in the Top 10 in the SEC last season in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage, and blocked shots
Kevin Knox (FR forward, Kentucky)
- Versatile freshman that ranked 10th overall in ESPN’s Top 100 for the 2017 class
Daryl Macon (SR guard, Arkansas)
- Averaged 13.4 points per game last season and had 27 double-digit scoring games
Hamidou Diallo (FR guard, Kentucky)
- The talented freshman will benefit from a year of practice in Lexington and from his ability to play multiple positions
Robert Williams (SO forward, Texas A&M)
- Averaged 11.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last year and is a likely top five pick in the 2018 NBA Draft
Tyler Davis (JR center, Texas A&M)
- Could be the league’s most feared player in the paint due to his strength and aggressiveness
Collin Sexton (FR guard, Alabama)
- Phenomenal freshman playmaker that will be relied upon to fix Alabama’s offensive woes from a season ago
Quinndary Weatherspoon (JR guard, Mississippi State)
- Will be back at full strength and should be one of the SEC’s top scorers yet again
Matthew Fisher-Davis (SR guard, Vanderbilt)
- One of the best shooters in the entire country when at the top of his game
Terence Davis (JR guard, Ole Miss)
- Was one of college basketball’s most improved players last season
Jaylen Barford (SR guard, Arkansas)
- Along with Macon, will help fuel the experienced Razorbacks in ’17-18
Austin Wiley (SO forward, Auburn)
- Has the potential to be one of the most improved big men in the country given his added strength and aggressiveness
Mustapha Heron (SO guard, Auburn)
- Moving back to shooting guard will allow him to rack up points in a hurry in a dynamic Auburn offense
Braxton Key (SO forward, Alabama)
- Led the Crimson Tide in scoring and was second in rebounding as a freshman
Grant Williams (SO forward, Tennessee)
- Had two 30-point games during his first season in Knoxville
And now it’s decision time.
Votes will be gathered and announced during our Southeast Hoops Preseason Reader Awards series.
