Lanier is in his third season as the Vols’ associate head coach.
He served in the same role under Rick Barnes at Texas for four years and had stints as an assistant at Florida and Virginia prior to that.
Lanier also has head coaching experience having been the lead man at Siena from 2001-05.
It is unknown whether his withdrawal from the Missouri State opening will result in a return to Tennessee, or if the veteran coach will pursue another head coaching job.
Tennessee finished the season as SEC co-regular season champions, but the Vols were ousted by Loyola Chicago in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
