Kyle Keller leaves Texas A&M for Stephen F. Austin

As if losing Rick Stansbury wasn’t bad enough, Texas A&M head coach Billy Kennedy has now lost assistant Kyle Keller as well.

Keller is set to become the next head coach at Stephen F. Austin after Brad Underwood left the program to take over at Oklahoma State.

What It Means

  • Kennedy loses another top assistant. This isn’t Kennedy’s fault. He’s built Texas A&M into a premier program in the SEC, and quality coaches like Keller and Stansbury were bound to leave eventually. Now it becomes a wait and see in terms of who will replace these two.
  • The Lumberjacks are getting a well-respected coach. Before spending time with Kennedy in College Station, Keller was an assistant under coaching greats in Bill Self and Eddie Sutton. Those aren’t two bad ones to learn from.

The Big Questions

  • Who does Kennedy hire to replace Keller? It’s obviously an interesting question when you consider that he also has to replace Stansbury. Both were major pieces of the puzzle from a coaching and recruiting standpoint.
  • How will this affect Texas A&M recruiting? Keller and Stansbury were huge in this regard. The Aggies had the No. 4 recruiting class in the country in 2015 with those two guys working the trail. That’s a massive hole to fill.
