LSU starts Will Wade era with dominant win over Alcorn State

LSU raced out to a 17-point halftime lead and never looked back in scoring an impressive 99-59 victory over Alcorn State.

The Tigers showed off their potential in Will Wade’s first game on the sidelines in Baton Rouge, with freshman point guard Tremont Waters exploding for 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting.

Three other LSU players scored in double figures, with Duop Reath and Wayde Sims each adding 11, and Brandon Sampson scoring 10.

Alcorn State was led by A.J. Mosby, who added 15 points on the night.

LSU shot 58 percent from behind the 3-point line (11 of 19) and 61 percent overall from the floor.

Lovell’s Analysis

Although the level of opponent will obviously get tougher, this was a tremendous showing from the Tigers in Wade’s debut.

We’ve talked all offseason about the impact that Waters could have on this team, and it’s clear that he can be the driving force needed to give LSU a chance to win a lot of games in the future.

And aside from the great shooting, what stands out most on the stat sheet is the Tigers only committing seven turnovers.

Shooting over 60 percent from the floor and only turning the ball over seven times is usually a good formula for success.

The schedule will get a bit tougher going forward, but it’s easy to see the impact that Wade is already having on this LSU team.

There’s a new energy and enthusiasm surrounding this program, and if Waters’ tremendous debut is a sign of things to come, the Tigers are well on their way to getting back where they want to be.
