Belmont pulls away late to earn first-ever victory over Vanderbilt

Belmont handed Vanderbilt its first loss of the season in scoring a 69-60 win at Curb Event Center.

The win was the first-ever for the Bruins in the overall series, with the Commodores winning the previous five games.

Belmont was led by Dylan Winder, who scored 24 points and added 11 rebounds.

Amanze Egekeze also had a big game in scoring 22 points for the Bruins.

Vanderbilt got 19 points from freshman Saben Lee.

Jeff Roberson posted a double-double in the loss, going for 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Lovell’s Analysis

I said earlier on Twitter that the Commodores needed to shoot well to win the game.

They did not.

Vandy went only 4 of 23 from the 3-point line and shot just 35 percent overall from the floor.

Simply put, Bryce Drew’s team will have a hard time winning games when that happens.

It’ll also have trouble when Matthew Fisher-Davis isn’t heavily involved, which was the case in this game as the senior guard was still struggling with an ankle injury.

Vanderbilt wasn’t overly impressive in its season-opening win over Austin Peay, and still appears to be a team in search of its identity after losing Luke Kornet to graduation.

On the bright side, Belmont isn’t an easy place to win, and the Bruins certainly earned it.

Of course, signing 5-star point guard Darius Garland earlier in the day may take a little of the sting of this loss away for Vandy fans.
