SEC Basketball RPI Report: December 11 edition

Here at Southeast Hoops, we strive to keep you up-to-date and informed on all happenings in the SEC basketball world.

With that in mind, we present you with our weekly SEC RPI Report.

This report will detail all 14 SEC teams and their current position in the NCAA’s Ratings Percentage Index rankings. The report will also provide some key metrics for each team such as Strength of Schedule (SOS) and win/loss records against each RPI quadrant.

Before we take a look at this week’s report, let’s discuss the offseason changes that were implemented by the NCAA in regards to its Ratings Percentage Index system.

This season, the NCAA is using different criteria to determine what constitutes a quality win / bad loss.

In the past, games were divided into four sections based on opponent’s RPI. The sections were games played against teams ranked 1-50, 51-100, 101-200, and 201+. That system will stay the same for games played on neutral sites; however, for home/away games the criteria will be a bit different.

Home/Away games will now follow the criteria in the table below:

Home Neutral Road
vs. RPI vs. RPI vs. RPI
Quadrant 1 1-30 1-50 1-75
Quadrant 2 31-75 51-100 76-135
Quadrant 3 76-160 101-200 136-240
Quadrant 4 161+ 201+ 241+

This change was made because the NCAA Tournament Committee has recognized that the location of a game plays a large role in the outcome.

The change should benefit teams who are winning tough, away games; however, the change will not be beneficial for any home team that loses to a less-than-stellar opponent.

Now that we have addressed the new criteria, we can unveil our first edition of the SEC RPI Report.

Note: If using a mobile device, you will need to turn it sideways to properly view the table below.
