Updated SEC Basketball RPI for Jan. 14: Auburn leads the way

It was another eventful Saturday around the world of SEC basketball, with lots of movement in the standings.

Of course, that also led to movement in crucial metrics that will be used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

Auburn’s win at Mississippi State moved the Tigers up to their highest RPI mark of the year in currently sitting at No. 6.

Elsewhere, Kentucky remained in the top 10 with a win at Vanderbilt, and both Ole Miss and South Carolina got nice boosts after their victories.

The SEC now has 10 teams in the top 60, while all but one is in the top 100.

Here’s the full breakdown:

Bruce Pearl’s team will try to keep its winning streak going when they travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama, who moved up several spots with a road win at LSU.

Lovell’s Analysis

The SEC continues to get love from the RPI, with 13 of 14 teams sitting at 91 or higher.

There’s no doubt that the RPI is a flawed metric that is in desperate need of updating, but since it’s an important metric when it comes to the NCAA Tournament selection process, it’s worth keeping an eye on.

I don’t think anyone expected Auburn to be leading the way at this point, but the Tigers are showing no signs of slowing down.

Florida is a team that could pick up several high RPI wins this week as they take on Arkansas and Kentucky.

There will continue to be tons of movement as these teams beat up on each other throughout conference play.
