With the introduction of Collin Sexton to the fold in Tuscaloosa last season, multiple veteran players saw a reduction in their roles.
One of those players who suffered the most was Dazon Ingram, who saw significant decreases in his non-free-throw shooting percentages, as well as in his assist numbers.
The redshirt junior guard from Theodore, AL, has been a stable force in head coach Avery Johnson’s lineup construction for the last three seasons, starting all but two games while he’s been at Alabama.
Inside the Numbers
His 6-5 frame at the point guard position has made him a real asset on the offensive end of the floor, both as a lead ball-handler and as an off-ball guard, and his length defensively makes him a capable defender both on and off the ball.
Ingram also excels in rebounding the basketball on both ends of the floor, ranking fourth in the SEC amongst guards in rebounds per game.
One of the improvements that he can look to make heading into his fourth year in the program is the consistency in his shooting from behind the arc.
Ingram is a career 34.7 percent 3-point shooter, but only shot 28.4 percent this past season, which is simply not sustainable for a guard in the SEC.
He can also stand to improve on his assist-to-turnover ratio, which was negative last season. That’s not where you want to see from a lead guard, so he’ll need to cut down on the turnovers and look to make better critical passes to teammates to set up scores.
Season Outlook
Ingram is one of Johnson’s veteran leaders that has been charged to take on a leadership role for the Crimson Tide this upcoming season.
His rebounding prowess will be needed on this particular team, so that’s an area that’ll he’ll need to continue to contribute in.
If he can be a more reliable shooter from three and from the free throw line, he can be one of the most productive players on the roster on both ends of the floor.
