SEC Basketball Power Rankings: Jan. 28 edition

It was another wild week of SEC basketball, with numerous teams scoring huge wins.

Of course, the SEC/Big Challenge allowed a lot of teams an opportunity to beef up their NCAA Tournament profiles, but not everyone could take advantage of it.

Let’s get to this week’s SEC basketball power rankings.

1. Tennessee Volunteers (18-1, 6-0)

The Vols just keep winning, and now they’ll prepare for back-to-back road games at South Carolina and Texas A&M.

2. Kentucky Wildcats (16-3, 5-1)

Kentucky’s big win over Kansas was its third straight over a top 30 KenPom team, and it’s clear that the Wildcats are finding their rhythm.

3. LSU Tigers (16-3, 6-0)

Will Wade’s team earned one of the best comebacks of the college basketball season at Missouri, and the winning streak could continue with winnable games against Texas A&M and Arkansas this week.

4. Mississippi State Bulldogs (15-4, 3-3)

The win over Auburn was huge, but the Bulldogs must now turn their focus to road matchups against Alabama and Ole Miss.

5. South Carolina Gamecocks (10-9, 5-1)

Even with the loss at Oklahoma State, I’ll keep the Gamecocks in this spot for now since they’ve won five of their first six SEC games, and they should be amped up to host Tennessee.

6. Ole Miss Rebels (14-5, 4-2)

The Rebels are preparing for one of their most important weeks of the season, as they’ll head to Florida and welcome Mississippi State in hopes of getting back on track.

7. Auburn Tigers (13-6, 2-4)

Despite losing three in a row, I wouldn’t expect the Tigers to stay in the No. 7 spot all that long since Bruce Pearl’s squad will likely turning things around with four of their next five games at Auburn Arena.

8. Alabama Crimson Tide (12-7, 3-3)

Losing to Baylor really didn’t hurt the Tide’s NCAA Tournament chances, and they have two big resume-building opportunities this week against Mississippi State and Auburn

9. Florida Gators (11-8, 3-3)

Speaking of teams with huge opportunities on the horizon, here are the Gators’ next four games: vs. Ole Miss, vs. Kentucky, at Auburn, and at Tennessee.

10. Arkansas Razorbacks (11-8, 2-4)

The Hogs have lost five of six and are simply struggling right now to find ways to win close games.

11. Missouri Tigers (10-8, 1-5)

After the deflating loss to LSU, Cuonzo Martin’s group must now turn their attention to a challenging road trip to Auburn.

12. Georgia Bulldogs (10-9, 1-5)

Give the Bulldogs a ton of credit for their impressive performance against Texas, and even in a rebuilding season, there’s a lot of young talent for Tom Crean to work with.

13. Texas A&M Aggies (8-10, 1-5)

The Aggies may have earned the best win of the challenge with their emphatic victory over Kansas State, and they’ll need that momentum with back-to-back games against the SEC’s two unbeaten teams.

14. Vanderbilt Commodores (9-10, 0-6)

While it was going to be tough to win at Oklahoma, a 31-point loss doesn’t exactly produce a lot of confidence moving forward.
