South Carolina Football Season Preview: 2023 Predictions, Players To Watch, More

Chris Lee and Blake Lovell preview South Carolina Gamecocks for the 2023 season in SEC football.

The Gamecocks are coming off of an 8-5 season in 2022, which included wins against two top 10 teams in Tennessee and Clemson.

SOUTH CAROLINA OFFENSE

– The Gamecocks scored 132 points in their final three games in 2022.

– Dowell Loggains takes over for Marcus Satterfield (Nebraska) as offensive coordinator, and he’ll look to make Spencer Rattler one of the top QBs in the SEC.

– Juice Wells is back as SEC’s top returning receiver (68 recs, 928 yds, 6 TDs in 2022).

– South Carolina finished top 40 in scoring offense (tied 38th) and passing offense (40th) but 105th in rushing (118.8 mpg), so JuJu McDowell and Mario Anderson aim to improve the running game.

SOUTH CAROLINA DEFENSE

– Shane Beamer’s team will aim to improve against the run (116th nationally in allowing 198 ypg, five straight seasons at 11th or worse in SEC).

– Nick Emmanwori and DQ Smith were Freshman All-Americans, and they should lead a strong secondary despite losing Cam Smith and Darius Rush to the NFL.

– The Gamecocks should also boast one of the best special teams units in college football.
